Artificial intelligence tools are only as good as the prompts that drive them — and most lawyers are leaving enormous value on the table by using AI the way they'd use a search engine instead of the way they'd direct a skilled associate. This hands-on, 3-hour program teaches attorneys how to write precise, structured prompts that consistently produce usable, defensible work product, and gives participants a customizable library of prompts they can immediately apply in their own practice.
Lawyers will move beyond generic "type a question, get an answer" AI use and learn the underlying techniques that separate mediocre AI output from genuinely useful legal work: how to give AI the right context, how to constrain and format its output, how to iterate and refine results, and how to spot and correct for hallucinations and errors before they become a problem for a client or a court.
Throughout the session, lawyers will practice building and refining their own prompts in real time, receive feedback on what makes a prompt effective, and discuss the ethical and professional responsibility considerations that come with using generative AI in legal practice, including competency, confidentiality, supervision duties, and verification obligations under applicable rules of professional conduct.
This program will include a session on the ethical use of AI in the law so you can balance technological innovation with maintaining ethical standards. We will examine how AI tools can be used in compliance with the American Bar Association’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the New Jersey RPC’s, including issues of competence, dealing with AI hallucinations, confidentiality, supervision, and reasonable fees. The discussion will also address practical strategies for evaluating which AI technologies can be used responsibly, as well as potential pitfalls to avoid.
Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of which AI tools to integrate into their practice ethically and how to use them effectively.
