Domestic Violence Economic Mediation – Two Day Training
After a period of suspension due to the pandemic, the New Jersey Supreme Court has approved a reinstatement of the Domestic Violence Economic Mediation (DVEM) program. The DVEM program permits trained economic mediators to mediate economic issues in certain dissolution matters where a domestic violence final restraining order is in effect between the parties. The program went statewide in the fall of 2023.
Only Mediators that have been approved by the Judiciary to serve as Economic Mediators and who are on the Judiciary’s roster may participate in the DVEM program. If you are an approved mediator, already on the judiciary roster of family economic mediators, and you want to mediate dissolution cases where the parties have a domestic violence final restraining order, you must take this two-day course. Upon completion, the Court will add your name to the list of mediators approved to handle economic mediation and you may by appointed by the court pursuant to the program guidelines. The program will teach you how to conduct a mediation where there is a final restraining order in place and will sensitize you to the dynamics of domestic violence. You will also see important demonstrations of mediation sessions with survivors and perpetrators.

- The dynamics of an abusive relationship
- A survivor’s video and debrief
- An overview of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and five typologies of IPV
- The power and control wheel
- Why victims stay
- Demonstration of mediation sessions with the survivor and perpetrator
- Addressing power imbalances
- Simulation exercises
