Presented in cooperation with the Jewish Bar Association of New Jersey

Joshua Greene is a noted Historian, Documentarian and Author. Joseph Lemkin is an attorney, son of a Holocaust survivor and cousin of Rafael Lemkin, who created the term “genocide” to describe what happened to his family and his people.  Together, they present a CLE seminar on the law, the Holocaust and how personal experience can spur people to do justice.

Joshua Greene will present an unforgettable seminar based on three of his books, “The Girl Who Fought Back - Vladka Meed and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising,” “Hitler’s Courts” and “Justice at Dachau.” Joseph Lemkin will moderate and relate his own experiences in this special three-part seminar.

Part 1: Justice through Resistance –Vladka Meed and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
Based on Joshua Greene’s new book, “The Girl Who Fought Back – Vladka Meed and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising,” Greene will explore one of history’s most powerful acts of resistance and what lawyers can learn from this gripping time in history. This segment will focus on Meed, who joined the Jewish underground as a teenager to fight back against oppression in the Warsaw Ghetto. The astonishing true story highlights the persistence of bravery in the face of hate and lessons for standing up to hate in our time.

Part 2: Hitler’s Courts
Joshua will explore the complicity of lawyers, judges, and law professors in the crimes of the Third Reich. Essentially, the message is: Once German courts validated Nazi policy as legal, Hitler’s success was assured.

Part 3: Justice through the Courts –Chief Prosecutor William Denson and the Dachau War Crimes Trials
This segment will explore a critical event in the post- Holocaust period: a sprawling but little known series of war crime trials following WWII. The Dachau War Crimes Trials prosecuted 1,600 guards, officers, doctors, kapos, and other executors for crimes inside the Dachau, Mauthausen, Flossenburg and Buchenwald Concentration Camps. The precedents established during the trials proved influential in human rights law and informed legal procedure in The Hague and other parts of the world. The segment is based on Greene’s book “Justice at Dachau.”
