Fast-Track Your MCLE Requirements with the NJSBA’s New Attorney Day!

Join us for New Attorney Day, a program designed to help newly admitted attorneys in New Jersey fast-track their Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) requirements.

Your Requirements: Effective Jan. 1, 2024, new attorneys in New Jersey are required to earn 16 total credits in a minimum of six subject areas, including at least one credit in New Jersey attorney trust an business accounting fundamentals.

How it Works: Spend just one day attending programs and satisfy the rest of the requirement by watching video on demand.

First, Register for the Program – as an attendee, you’ll be able to choose from one morning session and one afternoon session on the day of the program.

Morning sessions include:
– Intro to Civil Trial Prep
– Intro to Criminal Trial Prep

Afternoon sessions include:
– Intro to Administrative Law
– Intro to Real Estate

Morning Session | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Shawn is a highly respected civil trial practitioner and is Certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Civil Trial Attorney. In three quick hours, he will share practical insights and tips to properly prepare your case for trial. You’ll gain an understanding of the procedures, techniques and strategies you need to know if you plan to handle a civil case in New Jersey.

Gain the foundation to successfully handle basic civil litigation cases in New Jersey, including presentation on:

  • Taking the case: client interviews; evaluating the case; retainer agreements and budgets; client communications and managing client expectations.
  • Pre-Suit activities: litigation due diligence; investigations; evidence preservation witness interviews; spoliation; formal pre-suit discovery.
  • Case planning: litigation strategies; forum selection – federal or state court?
  • Pleadings: pleading standards and requirements; venue selection; complaints and answers; fictitious party practice; removal; crossclaims, counterclaims and third-party pleadings.
  • Pre-trial discovery and case management
  • Expert Witnesses: the role of expert witnesses; expert qualifications; finding and vetting experts; working with experts; report preparation; expert discovery; challenging admissibility of expert testimony.
  • Motion practice and procedure: dispositive motions; dismissal and summary judgment; timing and special requirements; motions in limine; oral argument; forms of orders; consent orders.
  • Alternate dispute resolution
  • Settlement conferences: settlement negotiation strategies.
  • Final pre-trial preparation: pre-trial conferences/orders; witness preparation; pre-trial submissions; Evidence presentation.

Afternoon Sessions | 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

This program will provide an overview of preparing and presenting administrative law cases at both the state and federal level. The panel will open with a discussion of the types of cases that are heard at the Office of Administrative Law and then delve into how to handle an administrative case from entering an appearance through final decision and appeal. Our distinguished panel of administrative law practitioners joined by Acting Director and Chief Administrative Law Judge Barry Moscowitz will offer invaluable insight into administrative law practice and the hearing process.
