All are welcome to join the NJSBA Minorities in the Profession Section on June 18 for a celebration of Juneteenth. Enjoy food, drink and music as the section commemorates freedom, resilience, and the end of chattel slavery in the United States. The event is free and open to all NJSBA members.
This year’s celebration will feature keynote speakers Elaine Buck and Beverly Mills, two authors who later in life embarked on a mission to connect Black history to local and national history books. Their book, If These Stones Could Talk: African American Presence in the Hopewell Valley, Sourland Mountain and Surrounding Regions of New Jersey, brings to life the largely forgotten history of a 19th Century Black cemetery in Central Jersey. The pair will discuss how searching the woods for gravestone markers and rummaging through land deeds revealed a deeper story of how oral histories of the Black community are typically overlooked in small towns all over the United States.
Juneteenth commemorates the June 19, 1865, arrival of Union General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas. The general informed the enslaved African Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended, nearly two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth became a New Jersey state holiday in 2020 and a federal holiday the following year.
Don’t miss this annual celebration of Black history and its important place in society and the law.
