As a legal professional, I know you and I share the New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s belief that “informed citizens are better citizens." The financial support of donors like you is helping the Foundation create the next generation of informed citizens by funding programs that reach out to students from elementary through high school.
For instance, our Law Fair and Law Adventure programs for grades 3 through 8 allow students to delve into the law, using their creativity to write original legal cases and then perform them at the New Jersey Law Center in front of family, teachers and classmates. Taking it a step further, the high school mock trial competition provides students the opportunity to hone their public speaking and listening skills when they take on the roles of lawyers, witnesses and jurors, and also foster their understanding of the law.
The Foundation also promotes civic engagement with timely articles in its student newsletters, The Legal Eagle, our legal newspaper for kids, and Respect, our tolerance and diversity newsletter. New this year, a civics blog called The Informed Citizen, helps people better understand our democracy. So far, The Informed Citizen has published posts on the 17th Amendment and the consent of the governed, the origins of political parties, a history of U.S. voting rights and an explanation of the presidential cabinet. Informative posts are added monthly.
To continue providing these valued resources and to help us “create informed citizens,” the Foundation needs the generous support of donors like you. Education is key to the Bar Foundation’s mission—whether keeping students up to date with timely articles about social justice issues, informing specific citizens about their rights under the law with a publication or seminar, or teaching students about the constitution and justice system.
