    Description:
Migration from Italy to the United States became a massive phenomenon between 1880 and 1920, when roughly 4 million Italians, mostly from the southern regions of the country, arrived in America. That boom meant Italians became one of the largest ethnic groups in the country. Then in 1920, Congress passed the Quota Acts and Italian immigration was drastically limited. Each family had its own reason for migrating, but they all shared a desire to survive. Many who came were laborers who faced discrimination and were subject to laws that targeted them. Join us for a discussion about the Italian migration to the United States and New Jersey, examining how they integrated and thrived; what it has meant for the economy, legal system; and how it parallels the journeys of people from around the world who continue to seek out the United States to improve their lives and work hard in a new country where policies and laws are not always welcoming.
