Attorney trust and business accounting is governed by the Rules of Professional Conduct. The rules are specific and compliance is mandatory.

Yet, in the day-to-day of running a practice, it can be easy to overlook the specificity and attention to detail compliance with the rules requires.Unfortunately, trust and business accounting mistakes can lead to serious consequences for attorneys, including suspension and disbarment.

All lawyers, whether solos or in big firms, need to know the rules - solo or small-firm practitioners are responsible for their office and the correct accounting and handling of money they hold in a trust. Practitioners in larger firms should also know trust accounting rules, especially managing partners who oversee the firm’s books. Even larger firms, where accounting responsibilities are delegated to bookkeeping departments, are susceptible to ethics trouble when their employees don’t follow the rules.

Join us for a seminar that will provide step-by-step information that will help you stay in compliance. Topics include:

  • The basics –what do the RPC’s require of every lawyer
  • Trust accounting essentials – the “step by step” of trust accounting
  • Common problems that may arise and how to handle them
  • A discussion of negligent misappropriation – what does it mean and how to avoid it
  • The Random Audit Program – its purpose and how to respond
