Effective Criminal Advocacy: A Trial and Appellate Perspective
Judge Susswein will speak to the Criminal Law Section on effective criminal advocacy. He will bring his 40 plus years of legal experience, most in the areas of criminal and constitutional law. He will speak to the dos of donts of advocacy, including what is most effective before judges. He will address both oral and written advocacy tips. The CLE presentation will be followed by a Section general business meeting.
The Honorable Ronald Susswein, J.A.D. was appointed to the bench in 2016 by Governor Chris Christie, serving in the Mercer Vicinage in family, civil, and criminal divisions. He then was elevated to the Appellate Division by Chief Justice Rabner in 2019. Prior to his judicial appointment he, served for over 30 years as a DAG/AAG in the Division of Criminal Justice and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office. During that time he drafted many of the Attorney General directives and guidelines that govern police and prosecutors today, including Brimage and Criminal Justice Reform. He also served in the Governor's Office as Assistant Counsel to Governor Jon S. Corzine. He holds a bachelor's degree from American University and graduated with honors from Georgetown University Law School. Perhaps most importantly for this program, he was Chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association Criminal Law Section from 1993 to 1994.
