Josephine Baker – A Groundbreaking Woman and the Law
Nov. 8 | 8:30 – 9:45 a.m. | Chopin
Cosponsored by the NJSBA LGBTQ Rights Section
Josephine Baker was born in the United States but lived most of her life as a French citizen. She was known as a groundbreaking dancer, singer, and actress, and was the first Black woman to star in a Hollywood major motion picture. In addition, she aided the French resistance during World War II and was awarded the Resistance Medal by the French Committee of National Liberation, the Croix de Guerre by the French military, and was named a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur by General Charles de Gaulle. This program will examine Baker’s extraordinary legacy as it relates to social issues and the law during her lifetime. The panel will look at legal issues related to women’s rights, race, adoption, the LGBTQ community, and military law.
