Featuring seasoned practitioners from the national and New Jersey voting rights arena, this program offers a sweeping overview of voting rights law across more than 150 years of American legal history.
This esteemed panel will begin with a discussion of the constitutional foundation laid by the Reconstruction Amendments and tracing the development of federal voting rights protections through the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the National Voter Registration Act of 1993. From there, the panel will turn to the U.S. Supreme Court’s most consequential recent decisions, addressing everything from partisan and racial gerrymandering to claims of vote denial and abridgement. The program then moves into the present moment, examining current litigation surrounding President Trump’s Executive Orders concerning federal elections, before closing with a close look at New Jersey’s own recently enacted John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act and what it means for practitioners in the state.
Whether you practice election law, constitutional law, or simply want to stay informed on voting rights during such a crucial time in the nation’s history, this program will provide the historical grounding and up-to-the-minute analysis you need, delivered by practitioners who litigate these issues firsthand.
