Atlantic City – William H. Mergner Jr. joined the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Executive Committee.
Mergner was sworn in May 16 as secretary of the state’s largest professional organization of judges, lawyers and legal professionals. The installation was part of the NJSBA’s Annual Meeting and Convention at Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa in Atlantic City.
Mergner is co-managing partner at Leary, Bride, Mergner & Bongiovanni, in Cedar Knolls, where he practices civil litigation. He is on track to become president in 2024.
“It is a thrill to serve the members of the New Jersey State Bar Association. This organization has provided me with so many opportunities and ways to improve my career, and I am grateful and honored to have the chance to give back,” said Mergner.
He has tried over 200 jury trials to verdict in state and federal courts in New Jersey. He handles the defense of construction site accidents, multi-party construction defect cases, environmental/toxic tort claims, products liability claims, professional liability claims including medical, engineering, agents/brokers claims, as well as complex general liability claims involving serious injury or death. He has also handled a significant number of appeals before the New Jersey Appellate Division, the New Jersey Supreme Court, and the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and has numerous favorable published and unpublished decisions.
He regularly provides seminars to clients of the firm and attorneys in New Jersey regarding a wide range of issues ranging from contractual risk transfer, products liability law, as well as developments in insurance coverage law, and trial techniques.
Mergner’s service to the legal community has been extensive. He is a former trustee of the association. He was also the chair of the association’s Special Task Force on the Practice of Law and Amicus Committee; is a member of the Meeting Arrangements and Planning, Judicial Administration and Insurance Defense committees, and is a past chair of its Civil Trial Practice Section. He serves as a member of the Supreme Court Committee on the Rules of Evidence, the Joint Supreme Court/NJSBA E-Courts Committee, the Supreme Court Committee on Expediting Civil Actions, and is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
He is a graduate from the Catholic University of America Magna Cum Laude in 1982. He received his Juris Doctor from the Marshall Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary in 1985.
He lives in West Caldwell with his wife, Patty. They have two sons.
