In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, we are proud to present this program featuring an interactive session that asks participants to examine the pressures faced by German jurists under the Nazis. Using legal decrees, judicial opinions, and case law of the period, Sarah Reza, the Manager of the Law and Justice Initiative at the US Holocaust Museum, will lead participants to study the role of judges in the establishment of the Nazi German state. This close scrutiny of the past will provide a framework for an exploration of the role of the judiciary and legal profession in a democracy.
Then, building on the historical lessons of the Holocaust, Rabbi David Levy, Director of the AJC, New Jersey, will bring the discussion into the present day by examining the current state of antisemitism in the United States. Drawing on findings from the State of Antisemitism in America Report (SOAR), Rabbi Levy, will review key trends, recent data, and the ways antisemitism manifests in institutional, professional, and civic spaces. The program will emphasize a “whole-of-society” approach, highlighting the role of the legal community and the broader community in recognizing, preventing, and responding to antisemitism today.
