The English language’s greatest poet and playwright had much to say about the practice of law. But beyond “let’s kill all the lawyers” and the other familiar quotations, the plays raise profound questions that persist to this day. Among these issues are questions about equality under the law for all members of society, the clash of law and equity and mercy versus justice. Join Jeffrey W. Herrmann, a civil litigation practitioner and adjunct professor on William Shakespeare studies, for a seminar that will explore Shakespeare’s insights into these issues by examining portions of “Hamlet,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” “Much Ado About Nothing” and “The Merchant of Venice.” Like a good Shakespeare play, the program will be informative, provocative and entertaining.
