This program offers crucial accounting information for all New Jersey attorneys. In the day-to-day of running a practice, it can be easy to let the business side of things take a back seat. Unfortunately, when trust and business accounting mistakes happen, there can be serious ramifications, and attorneys can even be disbarred.

Every practicing lawyer in New Jersey must maintain both a trust and business account that are subject to a random audit by the Office of Attorney Ethics. The purpose of the Random Audit Program is to ensure that law firms maintain required records of clients' funds and attorneys' fees. While the idea behind carefully maintaining these records is clear, some of the rules and procedures may not be.

This program will cover the essential Rules of Professional Conduct, with a refresher on Rule 121-6. Other topics include what it means to have good recordkeeping and supervised staff and why that is important; how to and how long to maintain files; what to do if negligent misappropriation happens and how to address it; and where to get help.

Join us to learn the basics every attorney needs.

The New Jersey Office of Attorney Ethics will provide insights on:

• Basic obligations under the Court Rules and Rules of Professional Conduct
• Protecting client funds
• Trust accounting essentials
• Principles of negligent v. knowing misappropriation
• What to expect in a random audit
