NEW BRUNSWICK – The New Jersey State Bar Association’s Annual Reception for Diverse Judges returned on Nov. 30 to celebrate two distinguished jurists—U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas and Essex County Superior Court Judge Stephen L. Petrillo. Each received the Justice Thurgood Marshall Award, presented by the NJSBA Board of Trustees and the Diversity Committee to judges who advance diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. NJSBA President Jeralyn L. Lawrence remarked that the two judges are “gems” in the state’s judiciary. In accepting the award, Salas said protecting the federal judiciary and democracy “must be of paramount importance to everyone.” Petrillo said the responsibility of wearing the robe has “never once—in seven years—stopped being of enormous importance to me.”
