After expressing concerns about a proposed $27 increase in the annual attorney registration fee, the New Jersey State Bar Association is pleased that the Judiciary took a second look and reconsidered their proposal. The NJSBA commends the Judiciary for keeping the fee at the same rate as last year. The Association urged the Judiciary to explore other ways to meet staffing and resource needs for the attorney disciplinary and other regulatory entities, particularly at a time when attorneys and law firms continue to face rising operational costs. The Judiciary was able to do that after further review. The proposed increase would have amounted to nearly a 40% rise in the assessment over just three years. The NJSBA remains confident that the disciplinary and regulatory systems can remain financially sound without placing additional burdens on attorneys. The NJSBA appreciates the opportunity to provide, and the Court’s consideration of, input on this important issue.
