William H. Mergner Jr. sworn in as NJSBA President-Elect

• William H. Mergner Jr., co-managing partner at Leary, Bride, Mergner & Bongiovanni in Cedar Knolls, was sworn in as president-elect of the New Jersey State Bar Association. 
• “It is an honor to serve the members of the New Jersey State Bar Association. I take this role seriously and will continue to work to fulfill the mission of the Association and to improve the lives of the lawyers of this state," Mergner said. 
• Mergner regularly provides seminars to clients of the firm and attorneys in New Jersey regarding a wide range of issues ranging from contractual risk transfer, products liability law, as well as developments in insurance coverage law and trial techniques.
NEW BRUNSWICK – William H. Mergner Jr. was sworn in as president-elect of the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA), the state’s largest professional organization of judges, lawyers and legal professionals.
   
Mergner is co-managing partner at Leary, Bride, Mergner & Bongiovanni, in Cedar Knolls, where he practices civil litigation. He is on track to become NJSBA president in 2024.
   
“It is an honor to serve the members of the New Jersey State Bar Association. I take this role seriously and will continue to work to fulfill the mission of the Association and to improve the lives of the lawyers of this state," Mergner said.
   
He has tried more than 200 jury trials to verdict in state and federal courts in New Jersey. He handles the defense of construction site accidents, multi-party construction defect cases, environmental/toxic tort claims, products liability claims, professional liability claims including medical, engineering, agents/brokers claims, as well as complex general liability claims involving serious injury or death. He has also handled a significant number of appeals before the New Jersey Appellate Division, the New Jersey Supreme Court, and the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and has numerous favorable published and unpublished decisions.
   
Mergner regularly provides seminars to clients of the firm and attorneys in New Jersey regarding a wide range of issues ranging from contractual risk transfer, products liability law, as well as developments in insurance coverage law and trial techniques.
   
Mergner’s service to the legal community has been extensive. He is a former trustee of the Association. He was active with the Pandemic Task Force and spearheaded its work on the resumption of jury trials, which released several reports. He was chair of the Association’s Special Task Force on the Practice of Law, Amicus Committee, Civil Trial Bar Section and Judicial Administration. He is a member of the Meeting Arrangements and Program, Judicial Administration, and Insurance Defense committees. He is currently serving on the Supreme Court Civil Practice Committee, having previously served as a member of the Supreme Court Committee on the Rules of Evidence, the Joint Supreme Court/NJSBA E-Courts Committee, the Supreme Court Committee on Expediting Civil Actions, and is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
   
Mergner graduated magna cum laude from Catholic University of America in 1982. He received his Juris Doctor from the Marshall Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary in 1985.
   
He lives in West Caldwell with his wife, Patty. They have two sons.
