Murder trials capture America’s attention like no other. They are the original reality TV. From gruesome murder scenes to the search for who is responsible, society is consumed with the process. For lawyers, a successful prosecution or defense of one of these high-profile cases can be a crowning professional achievement. Further, the trials provide an orderly way to investigate and prosecute these heinous acts so that, hopefully, the guilty are punished and the innocent go free. But does the process always work?

This lively seminar examines true crimes, from the grisly details of the murder scenes to the decision to indict, to the trial, and finally, to the verdict. We will scrutinize every aspect of the trials from murder to verdict and, in doing so, will put the legal system on trial.
