When Benjamin Franklin was asked what kind of government had been created after the ratification of the Constitution, he famously replied, “A republic – if you can keep it.”
The United States is both a republic, a representative form of government in which ultimate power rests with the people, and a democracy. Its endurance depends on the ongoing commitment, vigilance, and participation of its citizens.
As members of the legal community, we hold a special responsibility to uphold the Constitution and the principles on which our democracy depends. In recent years, and even in recent months, we have witnessed events that test the strength of our institutions: political assassination, assaults on freedom of speech, and vitriol in social media that divides our citizens and threatens our freedoms. In such a climate, it can be difficult to discern fact from fiction – or to know what role lawyers can and should play in preserving our republic.
This program serves as both a call to awareness and a call to action. It brings together distinguished members of the legal and political communities who are speaking out and taking meaningful steps to defend our nation’s democratic foundations.
