10:55 | “Water You Doing About PFAS?” How Water Utilities and Regulators Are Addressing an Unprecedented Challenge
After decades of use, the synthetic chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (“PFAS”) are omnipresent in our environment. PFAS are associated with health risks like cancer, immunity issues, and developmental delays, and the federal government and New Jersey are taking action. Drinking water providers are or will be required to remove PFAS from the water they provide to customers. This poses an unprecedented challenge: how will that be done? This panel will explain what PFAS are, the current federal and New Jersey regulatory landscape governing PFAS, and the steps water utilities are taking to treat for PFAS. The discussion will also explore how new and expensive PFAS treatment methods are paid for. Are ratepayers the only source, or are there other options? How do municipal water utilities deal with this critical issue? What are the rate impacts and how can they be managed? Join the panel for an informative discussion on PFAS and how they are impacting the water industry now and for years to come.

2:45 | AI and Algorithmic Discrimination
Emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), are increasingly being used to make decisions that affect key aspects of our lives—for example, who is hired or receives a promotion, who is selected for an apartment rental or obtains a mortgage, and who receives certain medical treatments or obtains insurance coverage. These technologies carry potential benefits for the public. But they can also perpetuate longstanding biases in our society, leading to unfair outcomes for protected groups. This training outlines how the NJ Law Against Discrimination provides protections in employment, housing, and places of public accommodation when the use of AI leads to unfair outcomes, as well as strategies that individuals and companies can deploy to ensure that automated systems are fair, equitable, and minimize bias and discrimination.
