Disordered gambling can become a hidden addiction. Unlike individuals who struggle with substance use disorders, problem gamblers often show no obvious physical signs or symptoms. On top of that, they may refuse to seek help out of shame or fear of judgment. Some people find it hard to admit they have a gambling problem, even after losing all their savings due to excessive skill-based gambling in Atlantic City or Pennsylvania.
61% of New Jerseyans gambled last year and an estimated 200,000 grapple with addiction.
In this gripping lunchtime webinar, presenters from the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey will discuss how gambling disorders and addictions can intersect with the law.
Topics include:
- Overview of problem gambling, its definition and the legal implications of gambling disorders.
- Legal and ethical considerations: discussion of the legal and ethical issues surrounding problem gambling, such as confidentiality, informed consent and duty to report.
- How to identify and support clients with gambling problems: strategies for lawyers to recognize signs of problem gambling in their clients and resources for supporting and referring them to help.
- Gambling-related crimes and consequences: examination of crimes related to problem gambling, such as embezzlement, theft, or fraud and the resulting legal consequences.
- Collaboration with treatment providers and resources: information on how lawyers can work with treatment providers to support clients struggling with problem gambling.
- Best practices for lawyers working with problem gamblers: guidance on best practices for lawyers interacting with clients struggling with problem gambling, including communication strategies and boundary setting.
- Answers to your questions.
