A knowledgeable paralegal is of immense value to a busy law office. This is especially true for family law practitioners, who depend on their support teams to perform many functions in matrimonial practice. With a divorce rate of 2.3 divorces per 1,000 people in New Jersey, the need will not decline any time soon.
We have designed this program specifically for new attorneys and paralegals or legal assistants who handle family law matters. It focuses on the technical requirements, skills, and techniques they need to provide meaningful support in a modern family law practice.
You will learn the foundations of a successful family law case - the paperwork, the filings, and the preliminary motions. You will delve into Court Rules, review the Case Information Statement and other forms, and find out how to complete them. Attendees will also learn practical techniques for preparing motions and pendente lite applications.
Register today for New Jersey's ultimate family law practice primer. The program is also an excellent brush-up for attorneys who understand family law, but not necessarily litigation logistics.
Other topics include:
- The role of the paralegal in the law office - phones calls, screening, relationship to attorneys, clients, and other office staff (ethical considerations)
- Basic family law accounting and tax returns
- Child support guidelines - what they cover, what they don’t and why they are important (ethical issues)
- Case information statements - preparation and importance
- Preparation of a pendente lite motion, pendente lite applications and post
- Judgment motions for support -what judges want to see
- Pre-trial, subpoenas, discovery, trial binder, working with clients
- Organizing files
- The role of the paralegal in preparing for Early Settlement Program proceedings and early settlement conferences
