Salary: $90,000 to $115,000 (commensurate with experience)
Description: The New Jersey Assembly Republican Office is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as Legislative Counsel. This position provides legal analysis of proposed legislation and staffs committee hearings and floor votes in support of Assembly Republican members. The role also provides day-to-day guidance to members and district office staff on compliance matters and other issues as they arise. The ideal candidate combines strong legal and policy analysis skills with a solid understanding of New Jersey’s legislative process and is comfortable working under deadline pressure in a fast-paced legislative environment.
Job Duties:

Prepare legal and policy analysis of proposed legislation in advance of committee hearings and Assembly floor votes.

Draft testimony, position statements, talking points, and responses for legislative hearings.

Staff legislative committee hearings, providing real-time legal and procedural support.

Complete assignments as directed by the Executive Director.

Advise Assembly members and district office staff on compliance matters, including the filing of personal financial disclosure statements.

Assist with tracking completion of statutorily required training for members and staff, including ethics and sexual harassment prevention training.

Respond to Open Public Records Act (OPRA) requests submitted to the office, as needed.

Provide general guidance on ethics-related questions and complaints, as needed.

Assist members and staff with questions on Assembly rules and the Joint Rules of the Legislature, and familiarity with Mason’s Manual of Legislative Procedure.
Requirements
Education/Experience: Candidates must hold a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and be admitted to and in good standing with the New Jersey State Bar. A minimum of three to five years of legal experience is required, preferably in government, legislative affairs, public policy, administrative law, or a related field. Familiarity with New Jersey’s legislative process, Assembly rules, the Joint Rules of the Legislature, and Mason’s Manual of Legislative Procedure is preferred. Candidates should possess strong research, writing, and analytical skills, along with the ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate effectively with members, staff, and the public. Sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive or confidential matters are essential.
Salary: $90,000 to $115,000 (commensurate with experience)
