Lisa Westerman Spiegel is a New Jersey lawyer and the Associate Executive Director, Continuing Legal Education for the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA). The position entails financial strategy, creativity and an ability to read trends in the law.

She has worked with the very best of the New Jersey legal community to educate tens of thousands of lawyers and judges throughout the state, and to bring to light important, up-to-the-minute issues. She believes that it is vital for the New Jersey legal community to have a solid grasp of ever-evolving technology as a means for improving the lives of New Jersey citizens. This is especially true of blockchain technology, which she views as an idea as revolutionary as the light bulb. Her article entitled “Blockchain Technology – Transforming the Practice of Law and Society as a Whole” that she co-wrote with a colleague was published in New Jersey Lawyer Magazine in June 2020. She is a former member of CompTIA’s Blockchain Council, a member of NYSAE and a member of The New Jersey and Middlesex County Bar Associations.

Lisa has been dedicated to education throughout her life. She currently partners with judges, legislators and other attorneys to present civics lessons to college classes and community groups. She also partners with a colleague to present continuing legal education seminars in technology. In 2022, they were invited to speak at the prestigious New Jersey Judicial College.

In 2006, she co-authored “No Parent Left Behind – A Guide to Working with Your Child’s School” with Pamela Petrosino. The book’s purpose was to demystify the school system and educational jargon so that all parents could be active partners in helping their children receive the best possible education. The book was inspired by hers and Ms. Petrosino’s children, who were very different learners.

Lisa speaks Hebrew and Spanish in addition to English and is an expert needle pointer. When not working, she enjoys community theatre and boogie boarding. She lives in Metuchen with her husband Dan. She is the proud mother of Matthew and Bobbi Spiegel and the proud daughter of Joyce Westerman and S. Thomas Westerman, MD, a retired prominent physician, inventor and expert witness. Her grandfather Morris Westerman was one of the longest-serving members of the Monmouth County Bar Association.

Quality of Life Crimes – Prosecution and Prevention
This program focuses on pre-emptive and reactive approaches to quality-of-life crimes, generally referred to as those non-violent offenses that have the capacity to deteriorate a community. Third, these acts and the environments they create are often precursors to violence. With that in mind, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and Atlantic City Police Department will share their experiences policing, prosecuting and preventing these crimes and their impact through innovative programming in courts and empathetic outreach on the streets and Boardwalk of Atlantic City.

Ethics

The Path to Readmission (After Disbarment)
On Oct. 15, the state Supreme Court issued a monumental administrative determination, approving a path to readmission for disbarred attorneys. This marks a significant change for the legal community, overturning decades of decisions based on In Re Wilson, in which the Court held that any lawyer who knowingly misappropriates client funds, under any circumstances, will be disbarred.

Join Christina Vassiliou Harvey and Donald Lomurro, attorneys who argued the case for the attorney respondent in In re Wade, which began the inquiry into whether there could be a path back for certain lawyers. They will take you through In Re Wilson and its progeny, automatic disbarment, disbarment in other states, the shift in New Jersey and the steps that can lead a disbarred attorney to reinstatement.

Blurred Lines and Ethical Boundaries

Some ethical boundaries are obvious. Others are blurry. One example is when a lawyer invests in or becomes a business partner of the client. Investing in a client’s business is not an ethical violation on its own, though lawyers who acquire the stakes are likely targets of malpractice or ethical complaints. The act leaves attorneys vulnerable to claims that they placed their own self-interest before that of their clients, violating not only their ethical but also their fiduciary obligations.

Join Michael McCormick, director and counsel of the New Jersey Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection, and esteemed practitioners as they provide information on the latest pitfalls for lawyers who do business with their clients.

Topics include:

  • The Fund’s experience with respondent attorneys who became business or investment partners with their clients
  • The slippery slope to Ponzi schemes
  • The danger of blurring the lines between attorneys, investment advisors and tax accountants
  • Prohibitions on multi-disciplinary ventures that include legal services
  • Navigating the Rules of Professional Conduct related to doing business, including lending or borrowing funds with a client
  • The Fund’s jurisdiction: attorney-client and fiduciary relationships versus investing or doing business with someone who happens to be an attorney
