About the Program
Congratulations on your recent admission to the New Jersey bar!
We at the New Jersey State Bar Association/New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education welcome you to the profession for a day designed for recently admitted lawyers. You’ll fulfill your “recent admit” CLE requirements, meet colleagues and hear a special panel of leaders discuss what they wish they knew when they were starting out in the profession. You will also receive materials that you can reference throughout your career and practical information to set you on the road to success.
The day begins with breakfast and a welcome from officers of the NJSBA Young Lawyers’ Division.
Next, fulfill your new attorney requirements with a combination of interactive live programs and recorded on-demand seminars. Choose one live seminar in the morning and one in the afternoon for six credits. Everyone registered will also receive a library of on-demand recorded courses that will fulfill the remaining 10 new admit credit requirements, including the New Jersey attorney trust and business accounting course. Finally, learn from experience! Hear from members of the YLD and the NJSBA Leadership Academy in a fun roundtable on what they wish they knew when they were starting out. They will also answer your questions, so ask whatever comes to mind!

– Intro to Municipal Court Practice Are you new to municipal court? This seminar, presented by a prominent and experienced panel, will provide important information to understand the municipal court system in New Jersey. Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your skills and prepare to practice effectively in the municipal courts.Topics include: common municipal court charges and court jurisdiction, client intake, entering the appearance and waiving the first appearance, discovery requests, the proper way to interact with court staff, prosecutors and judges, motion practice, plea-bargaining and pleas, sentencing, trials, appeals.
Speaker: – Intro to Law Office Management This fun and interactive program will discuss some practical law office management lessons that will make you more efficient, help your practice be more compliant with ethics rules and serve your clients better which, in the end, all translates to making more money. Topics include: what you are required to have under the Rules of Professional Conduct, whether to rent office space or have a virtual office, your website – what can be online, should be online and must not be online, malpractice insurance must-have’s, your role in supervising your staff, effective billing procedures and more. 12:05 | Choose from Two Sessions – Introduction to Workers’ Compensation Practice This program will cover the key concepts and issues that arise in workers’ compensation cases. The panelists will discuss the issues from both the petitioner and respondent perspective to prepare practitioners on either side for success when they take on a workers’ compensation case.Program topics include: workers’ compensation benefits, case defenses, court practices and procedures, how to navigate the written and unwritten rules of workers’ compensation court, case preparation from intake to trial, calculating the value of your case and settlement options, the top 10 most important workers’ compensation decisions relevant to today’s practice and more!Speaker: William T. – Introduction to Estate Planning This practical program will give you a solid introduction to estate planning. 2:45 | Roundtable Discussion with Young Lawyers – What I Wish I Knew You’ve studied the law but probably have a lot of questions about the more practical aspects of being a lawyer and wish you could ask someone who has recently “been there.” Now you can! Join a panel of lawyers who have been practicing for 10 years or less who will answer your questions and talk about what they wish they knew when they were starting out. Whether you are working for a firm, a government agency or embarking on a solo career, you will find answers to some of your most pressing questions.
