NJSBA Democracy Series Part 3 – How to Care for and Sustain a Republic
Member Price: $50.00

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
When Benjamin Franklin was asked what kind of government had been created after the ratification of the Constitution, he famously replied, “A republic – if you can keep it.”
We hold a special responsibility to uphold the Constitution and the principles on which our democracy depends. In recent years, and even in recent months, we have witnessed events that test the strength of our institutions: political assassination, assaults on freedom of speech, and vitriol in social media that divides our citizens and threatens our freedoms. In such a climate, it can be difficult to discern fact from fiction – or to know what role lawyers can and should play in preserving our republic.
The event will kick off with a Friendly Fire conversation between two of New Jersey’s leading political analysts and columnists, Mike DuHaime and Julie Roginsky. And feature a compelling keynote address by Elizabeth Matto, director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University. Her keynote will focus on her book, “To Keep the Republic – Thinking, Talking, and Acting Like a Democratic Citizen.”
Following her remarks, she will be joined by an esteemed panel offering insight and practical guidance on how attorneys can contribute to safeguarding democratic values.

The 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the start of the Revolutionary War is a collective moment to reflect upon the ideals forged at the founding and think deeply about how they are being practiced today. This anniversary comes though at a moment of deep division in the United States and great concern about the nation’s democratic ideals and processes. What better way to celebrate American democracy this year than by acting like a democratic citizen? In this talk, Dr. Elizabeth Matto will discuss those features that once were considered unique to American democracy– the citizenry’s passion for civic life and boundless energy to be involved – and offer a blueprint for recapturing them. A call to action for those in the legal profession and citizens at large, Matto will offer tangible steps we all can take “to keep the republic.” - 11:15 | Panel Discussion: Attorneys Who Have Been Active in Defending Democracy
