The English language’s greatest poet and playwright had much to say about the practice of law. But beyond “Let’s kill all the lawyers” and the other familiar quotations, the plays raise profound questions that persist this very day. Among these issues are questions about equality under the law for all members of society, the clash of law and equity and mercy versus justice.
This seminar will explore Shakespeare’s insights into these issues by examining portions of, inter alia, Hamlet, MacBeth, Much Ado About Nothing and the Merchant of Venice. These three hours of traffic on our stage will hopefully prove to be like a good Shakespeare play – informative, provocative and entertaining.
About the Speaker:
Jeffrey W. Herrmann, Esq. has practiced civil litigation in our State and Federal Courts since 1976 and is a partner with Cohn Lifland Pearlman Herrmann & Knopf LLP in Saddle Brook, New Jersey. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the English Department of Kean University where he teaches Shakespeare studies. In September 2024, he was named as the recipient of the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award by the New Jersey Law Journal as part of its New Jersey Legal Award of 2024. In addition, he was selected by the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey as the recipient of the Professional Lawyer of the Year Award for the year 2024.
