Statement of NJSBA President McGoughran on the legacy of Lt. Gov. Oliver

The New Jersey State Bar Association offers its deepest condolences to the family of Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver. She leaves a legacy in New Jersey not just as the first Black woman to serve as speaker of the General Assembly, but as the first Black woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor. Her work in her legislative career made a strong impact on New Jersey with her legislative initiatives helping the state’s most vulnerable citizens. We mourn the loss of a true advocate for social justice and an equitable New Jersey.
