On June 11, Red Bank Borough became an additional town on a growing list of municipalities that banned data centers. Officials said the temporary moratorium on local data centers was enacted to protect residents from the environmental and infrastructure impacts of unchecked data center expansion. The council cited risks to water resources, electricity demand, and property values, arguing that unchecked data-center growth could raise costs for residents.

Proponents of data centers point out that AI is essential to our everyday lives. It transforms sectors fundamental to breakthroughs in healthcare, scientific research and national security.

They say it is possible to responsibly build data centers that pay for their own electricity use, do not harm natural resources and create jobs.

One thing is certain – data centers are already having an impact on the legal industry.

Join Richard T. Wells, Esq., a partner in Archer & Griner and noted land use, permitting, zoning and environmental permitting lawyer as he leads panels of attorneys and elected officials who will delve into the legal issues surrounding data centers. Whether you practice in utility law, land use, zoning, municipal or environmental law, you will come away with knowledge that you can immediately put to use in your practice.
