NJSBA Board of Trustees Report
Dec. 12, 2024
Note: This does not constitute official minutes
Technology CLE credits: The Board voted to support a Court Rule amendment that requires attorneys to earn one CLE credit in the area of technology every two years as one of the five ethics/diversity/professionalism credits. The proposed rule is consistent with the NJSBA’s position on attorneys staying apprised of emerging technologies and aligns with ABA Opinion 512, which says lawyers should be cognizant of their continuing ethical duties when using generative AI in their practice. The Board expressed concern about adding a comment to RPC 1.1 about an attorney’s obligation to be competent in technology.
NJICLE speakers: The Board approved Robert C. Bordone and Joel Salinas as paid speakers for a NJICLE program called Conflict Resilience -Negotiating Disagreement Without Giving Up or Giving In. The program is based on a book of the same name that addresses how to navigate conflict and disagreements without straining personal relationships.
NJSBA Annual Meeting and Convention: The Board approved registration fees for the NJSBA’s 2025 Annual Meeting and Convention.
Legislation: The Board supported the following pending legislation in the state Legislature:
–A4543 Haider / S3153 Ruiz – a bill that prohibits the state Department of Children and Families from using federal benefits, received by a child in out-of-home placement, to reimburse the state for the cost of a child’s maintenance.
–A4475 Katz / S3458 McKnight – a measure that establishes standards for court-ordered counseling for domestic violence offenders.
