The New Jersey Judiciary, Office of Attorney Ethics, Supreme Court of New Jersey seeks a professional with strong management experience to work under the general direction of the Director and the First Assistant Ethics Counsel to manage and oversee the newly-created Motions and Appeals unit responsible for responding to petitions from disbarred attorneys seeking to be readmitted to practice; filing Motions for Reciprocal Discipline and Motions for Final Discipline; handling all aspects of Appellate Practice before the Disciplinary Review Board and the Supreme Court of New Jersey.
Remote Work: The Judiciary currently offers a hybrid work schedule and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of work outside of Judiciary buildings. To participate in this program, in addition to installing a multifactor authentication app on your phone or tablet, you will be required to have high speed home internet access.
Example of Duties:
* Directly participate in the development of internal procedures implementing the new statewide program for readmission from disbarment.
* Work toward database improvements designed to enable transparent data reporting on the new program.
* Report quarterly on work, assessing staffing needs, and whether those needs are appellate or trial-level in character.
* Review attorney work product focused on particular types of motion practice unique to the attorney disciplinary system. Examples include but are not limited to: (1) OAE Response to Petitions for Readmission to the practice of law by disbarred attorneys; (2) OAE Response to Petitions for Reinstatement to the practice of law by suspended attorneys; (3) Motions for Final Discipline in cases where NJ attorneys have been convicted of crimes; and (4) Motions for Reciprocal Discipline in which attorneys have been subjected to final discipline in another jurisdiction and are also admitted in NJ.
* Assign and delegate staff responsibilities within the unit.
* Coordinate the work activities of the motion/appellate sections of the Office of Attorney Ethics to ensure optimum performance.
* Supervise and oversee performance of unit secretary, paralegal and attorneys.
* Prepare performance reviews, and review staff time and leave requests consistent with Judiciary policies.
* Develop and provide internal training programs for unit employees to encourage leadership growth and employee retention.
* Investigate and prosecute attorneys who violate the Rules of Professional Conduct.
* Appear in all appellate proceedings before Disciplinary Review Board and Supreme Court related to matters where attorneys have been convicted of criminal conduct or have been disciplined in other jurisdictions.
* Coordinate all necessary emergent action to secure the temporary suspension of attorneys who have pleaded guilty or been convicted of serious criminal offenses.
* Personally perform motion practice akin to that of supervised attorney staff. Prepare memoranda on procedural or factually complex ethics matters for Director’s review and consideration recommending action for appellate disposition of charges of unethical conduct against attorneys.
* Direct and coordinate the preparation of legal pleadings, motions, complaints, briefs and related documents of a most complex nature at the appellate level, frequently on an emergent basis.
* On a monthly reporting cycle, monitor suspended attorneys’ compliance with conditions of final discipline to ensure adherence to Supreme Court Orders. Supervise compliance with terms of agreements in lieu of discipline (AILODs or “diversions”) statewide (both OAE cases and those of DECs), acting as primary attorney reviewer and decision maker for statewide diversion coordinator (AS3).Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position.
Salary range is $103,395.99 – $160,053.17. For newly hired individuals, the starting salary will normally be at the minimum of the salary range.
Requirements
Graduation from an American Bar Association-approved law school and five (5) years of professional administrative and/or program management experience which shall have included practice of law as an attorney; and three (3) years of supervision of staff.License: Attorney-at-Law with a plenary license in the State of New Jersey and having Supreme Court Good Standing Status of Active
Supervision Substitution for Level 2B Only
Attorney at law preference For positions that require or prefer the selected candidate be an Attorney-at-Law, the supervision of staff requirement may be waived for those candidates who are Attorneys-at-Law with a plenary license in the State of New Jersey and having Supreme Court Good Standing Status of Active; that have at least three years of experience applicable to the position to which they are applying.To Apply:

Residency Law: In accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), the “New Jersey First Act,” all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Any person may request an exemption from that requirement from the Employee Residency Review Committee in the Department of Labor & Workforce Development on the basis of either hardship or employer critical need.
Authorization to Work: US citizenship is not required. Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.
