The surprising dismissal in the Alec Baldwin manslaughter trial has revived the longstanding debate over the proper scope of mandatory disclosures in criminal trials. The case against the actor was dismissed when it was revealed that the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office took possession of live rounds of ammunition in March as evidence in the case, but failed to list them in the investigation file or disclose their existence to defense lawyers. This was in violation of the Brady rule, named after Brady v. Maryland, which requires prosecutors to disclose materials and exculpatory information in the government's possession to the defense.
