The state of Alabama has its share of stories about the struggle for civil rights: the Birmingham Baptist Church Bombing, Dr. King's “A Letter from a Birmingham Jail," the Freedom Rides, and Rosa Parks. And they are not just valuable lessons about civil rights; each of these stories teaches important lessons about diversity and inclusion in the practice of law. Join the CLE Performer, Stuart Teicher, in this interesting format: first, he explains the relevance of “A Letter from a Birmingham Jail" to the practice of law; then, he travels virtually to Alabama, shows us the actual sites where these stories occurred, then uses those incredible moments in history to reveal important lessons about diversity and inclusion in the legal practice.
Learning objectives include:
- Learning about the difference between elimination of bias and diversity as well as the need for lawyers to deliver on what he calls, "Diversity 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0" — diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Exploring individual steps lawyers can take in the practice to bring about inclusion and belonging in the practice of law.
- Examining the responsibility of the practice of law, as a whole, in the fight for inclusion and the role that the practice could take in improving that situation throughout society.
