NEW BRUNSWICK – How attorneys handle work-life balance and the impact of technology on the practice of the law will be among the subjects under discussion this Friday, Oct. 13 at the annual meeting of the General Council.
The General Council is comprised of leaders from the association, the New Jersey State Bar Foundation and county and specialty bar associations. The purpose of the group is to make recommendations to association’s Board of Trustees on matters impacting membership as well as the state’s legal community overall.
This year’s meeting will feature an interactive town hall where attendees will be able to participate in live polling and discussion on the top issues facing the profession. Topics will include a discussion of popular online legal services and their impact on the state’s legal community, particularly considering this summer’s state Supreme Court’s regulatory committee opinion that New Jersey lawyers cannot participate in certain services due to ethics violations and other concerns.
Every two years, the General Council also elects representatives to the New Jersey State Bar Association Nominating Committee. This year the seat went to Joseph Hughes, a partner at Zager Fuchs in Red Bank.
Hughes is a civil trial and worker’s compensation attorney who also serves as the municipal prosecutor in West Long Branch and as a civil arbitrator in Middlesex County Superior Court. Hughes is also a speaker in the field of litigation and is an instructor for the National Business Institute and the Sterling Educational System. He has served as a member and chair of his hometown’s environmental commission, as a volunteer board member for Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation, and is a singer-songwriter who—with his band Goldenseal—has performed for numerous groups and charities across the state.
The General Council Annual Meeting will begin at 1 p.m. at the New Jersey Law Center.
