NEW BRUNSWICK – According to statistics, between 20 and 25 percent of women will experience sexual assault during their college career, and more than half will tell no one. Forty-four percent of victims are under 18 years of age, and 84 percent of reported sexual coercion is experienced during the first two years of college.

To bring awareness to this problem and work to find solutions, the New Jersey State Bar Foundation is presenting “Violence Against Women on College Campuses,” a showcase event cosponsored with the New Jersey State Bar Association Senior Lawyers Special and Higher Education committees and the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education (NJICLE). The event will be held Tuesday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick.

Topics for discussion will include: how Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is used to combat sexual assault and what the public can do to help prevent college sexual assault.

New Jersey State Bar Foundation President Lynn F. Newsome will provide opening remarks and Raymond Brown, a partner at Greenbaum Rowe Smith & Davis, LLP and host of Due Process, will moderate the discussion. Members of the panel will include: Hon. Alberto Rivas, presiding judge of the Middlesex County Superior Court Criminal Division; Helen Archontou, chief executive officer of the YWCA Bergen County; Kelly Ann Bird, of Gibbons, PC, who has experience advising colleges and universities on sexual assault issues; Andrew T. Miltenberg, of Nesenoff & Miltenberg, LLP in New York, who has represented defendants wrongfully accused of campus sexual assault; Jackie W. Moran, Title IX coordinator at Rutgers University in New Brunswick and a former staff attorney with the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights; and Michele C. Lefkowitz, director of legal programs with Partners for Women and Justice, a nonprofit domestic violence organization.

What’s to come?
President Barack Obama signed an executive order declaring March “National Sexual Assault and Prevention Month” and began initiatives to help law enforcement obtain accurate evidence and victims obtain closure more quickly by making new grants available for a nationwide, community-based effort to end the backlog of untested rape kits. In addition to the topics listed above, the foundation’s showcase also will address what sexual assault prevention will look like in the Trump Administration, whether these efforts will continue and what law enforcement and victims can expect in the next four years.

HOW TO REGISTER
Registration is free for non-attorneys, educators, law students and full-time judges. For attorneys who are not NJSBA members, advanced registration for the showcase is $140.
