The New Jersey State Bar Association’s General Council will meet on Friday, Oct. 14 at the Law Center, New Brunswick. Lunch will be available at noon, and the meeting will commence at 1 p.m. The meeting will consist of:
• The consideration of resolutions
• A 1.5-credit CLE seminar entitled: "Stopping Gun Violence: The Legal, Political and Constitutional Implications"
• The election of a member to a seat on the NJSBA Nominating Committee
Pursuant to NJSBA bylaws, the General Council will elect a member to a two-year term on the NJSBA’s Nominating Committee. The committee is responsible for nominating candidates to serve as officers and trustees of the association, and as American Bar Association (ABA) delegates and members of the Nominating Committee.
Any member of the NJSBA’s General Council may become a candidate for a Nominating Committee seat by filing a petition signed by no fewer than 10 members of the General Council (as designated in the association’s bylaws, Article X(1)(A-E)). Nominees from Bergen County are not eligible, pursuant to Article VII(2)(h) of the association’s bylaws, which prohibits more than one of the two members elected to the Nominating Committee by the General Council to be from the same county.

The General Council standing rules and procedures for the election of General Council members to serve on the NJSBA Nominating Committee were recently amended by the General Council Executive Committee to improve the General Council nominating and election process. Membership in the General Council is governed by Article X(1) of the NJSBA bylaws and is limited to: NJSBA and NJ State Bar Foundation officers; current and past NJSBA trustees, past association presidents; and current committee chairs, section and division officers and designated delegates. Members also include NJSBA delegates to the ABA, as well as county and designated diversity bar association officers and delegates
