Understand Your CLE Requirements

Your First Full Compliance Period
Newly admitted New Jersey attorneys with a plenary license must complete 24 CLE credits in their first full two-year compliance period. Within that total, earn 16 credits across at least 6 of the 12 approved New Jersey new attorney subject areas, including at least 1 credit in NJ attorney trust and business accounting fundamentals.
The 24-credit total includes at least 5 ethics/professionalism credits, of which at least 2 are in diversity, inclusion, and elimination of bias. These are components of the total, not additional credits.
Technology Credit: At least 1 of the 24 credits must be in technology-related subjects for two-year cycles ending December 31, 2027, or later. The cycle ending December 31, 2026, is not subject to this new requirement.

Your Admission Year and CLE Timeline
Your first compliance period starts January 1 after your admission year. Your birthday determines your compliance group. Some attorneys first complete a one-year transitional period; the new attorney coursework is due in the first full two-year period.

On-Demand Access and Course Formats
You have 120 days from purchase to watch NJICLE on-demand videos before access expires. Choose courses with your compliance deadline in mind.
New Jersey generally limits alternative-format courses that do not qualify as live instruction to one-half of the total credit requirement in a compliance period. Exceptions may apply. Check the approved format and credits on each program’s detail page.
Rules Reviewed: October 12, 2026. This planning guide summarizes the standard New Jersey requirements. NJ Courts controls the rules, exemptions, and your compliance assignment. Review Official Guidance.
