NEW BRUNSWICK – The New Jersey State Bar Association is committed to advancing the rule of law, protecting individual rights under the Constitution, and fostering a diverse and inclusive legal community that is representative of our State. These values are embodied in our mission statement.
The increasing and unwarranted attacks on judges, law firms, legal service providers and attorneys undermine the rule of law and public confidence in the vital role of the judicial system as an independent and co-equal branch of government. Embodied in the U.S. Constitution, an independent judiciary has ensured the preservation of individual rights, checks and balances on excessive government actions, and a firm confidence by the public that access to justice is available to all. The escalation of attacks against the judiciary, including calls for impeachment of federal judges, as well as actions taken against private law firms for representing clients, conflict with the mission of our Association and the values of our profession.
Our commitment to supporting the rights of our Association’s members regardless of race, sex, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, immigration status, or disability — is unwavering. Lawyers, judges and courts have a critical role in society, both as stewards of the law and protectors of our democratic institutions. Unequal treatment “threatens not only the rights and proper privileges of the inhabitants of the State but menaces the institutions and foundation of a free democratic State,” as stated in the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination. The NJSBA stands with all who are or feel threatened or targeted by recent federal actions and will continue to abide by and embrace the rights protected by the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination.
The New Jersey State Bar Association remains steadfast in its mission of fostering a diverse and inclusive legal community, advancing the rule of law, protecting individual rights under the Constitution, preserving the independence of our judiciary, and providing equal protection and access to justice for all.
