In addition to the O’Hern Award presentation, this year’s Professionalism Awards event also marks the presentation of the Charles J. Hollenbeck Award, named for the longtime executive director of the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law, who retired.
The recipient is Janine Cerra, vice president of the Sussex County Bar Association who works as an assistant deputy public defender.
Cerra’s work has included representing clients who were under investigation by the state Department of Child Protection and Permanency, ensuring they received the rights to which they were entitled. She now works in the criminal trial unit where she advocates for clients who have drug-related issues to be directed to drug court and handles domestic violence cases and child endangerment matters, as well as robbery, assault and burglary cases.
Her “clients are indigent and in need of public legal assistance,” wrote Ann Pompelio, president of the Sussex County Bar Association, which nominated her.
In addition to her professional efforts, Cerra is involved in the Sparta Historical Society, her church, and Girls on the Run.
