NEW BRUNSWICK – The Justice Marie L. Garibaldi Board Room Dedication and Reception will take place on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick.
Friends and colleagues are invited to join Lynn F. Newsome, president, and the New Jersey State Bar Foundation (NJSBF) and its Board of Trustees as they pay tribute to the state’s first woman Supreme Court justice with a remembrance and dedication ceremony, followed by a reception.

Born on Nov. 26, 1934 in Jersey City, Marie L. Garibaldi was the only child of Dr. Louis and Marie S. Garibaldi. Upon graduation from Stevens Hoboken Academy, she attended Connecticut College and graduated with honors in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and a minor in political science. She was one of only 12 women in a class of 253 when she received her law degree from Columbia Law School in 1959. In 1963, she earned a Master of Laws degree from New York University School of Law. She was admitted to the bars of New Jersey, New York and the District of Columbia.
Garibaldi served as the New York regional counsel for the Internal Revenue Service before joining Riker, Danzig, Scherer, Hyland & Perretti, where she became a partner after three years.
Service to the legal profession was a hallmark of her career. In 1970, she was elected to the executive council of the Taxation Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) and served as the section’s chair from 1977 to 1978. She was among a group of lawyers who formed the Women’s Rights Committee in 1972. In 1978, she became the first woman to be elected as an officer to the association’s Board of Trustees, and in 1982 she became the first woman president of the association.
In 1982, Gov. Thomas H. Kean appointed her as the first woman to serve on the New Jersey Supreme Court. While on the Court, Justice Garibaldi chaired the Committee on Complementary Dispute Resolution. In 1998, the American Inns of Court Foundation established the Justice Marie L. Garibaldi American Inn of Court for Alternative Dispute Resolution. By the time she retired in 2000, she had authored 225 opinions.
On Jan. 15, 2016, Justice Garibaldi died at the age of 81.
