How the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Movement was Modeled on the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, and Why It Failed
Special Interest Track (Central Meeting Room 4)
Northern Ireland (NI) civil rights activists opposed to political, religious, and cultural discrimination found inspiration in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the U.S. civil rights movement. They modeled many of Dr. King's strategies and tactics in challenging the NI government to end housing and employment discrimination, end gerrymandering of electoral districts, institute a one-person one-vote system, disband the Ulster Special Constabulary militia, and repeal the Special Powers Act. The seminar will compare the two movements, highlight the different ways each government responded, and explain why the NI civil rights movement failed.

Impact of 2025 Executive Orders on Institutions of Higher Education and the Viability of Judicial Scrutiny

Since Jan. 20, Institutions of Higher Learning have faced significant uncertainty as a result of recent Executive Orders issued to date that affect transgender student athletics, university Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts, funding of research, and other such activities that implicate critical campus operations, policies and procedures. During this seminar sponsored by the Higher Education Special Committee, we will review the then-current state of affairs, hear from Higher Education professionals and administrators regarding how they are dealing with these ordered changes and their mandates on colleges and universities, and hear from experts on the justiciability of executive orders and how that impacts enforcement. We will also touch upon the broader implications of these orders not only to institutions of higher education but also to any educational institution which receives federal funding.

A Road Map to Success: Developing a Plan and Effectively Representing Parents with Disabilities
Family Law Track | Special Interest Track (Studio 4)
A program on effectively representing clients with cognitive disabilities, provided by attorneys from the Office of Parental Representation and Dr. David Brandwein, Chair, Department of Advanced Studies in Psychology, at Kean University. This panel will focus on supporting parents with disabilities by assessing their needs and advocating for appropriate evaluations, services, and therapy. The panel will discuss the factors used to provide accommodation for parents with cognitive delays and how to develop a plan to meet their individualized needs. The panelists will review the importance of retaining experts in these cases to perform various evaluations and provide a roadmap for success. Complex case studies will be presented to examine parents diagnosed with cognitive delays and their children who are likewise in need of services for cognitive disabilities. The discussion will feature insights from attorneys, social workers, and experts in the field, who have significant experience in these matters. Ethical concerns and best practices for attorneys will also be discussed. The primary objective of the panel will be to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and solutions in supporting parents and families with disabilities.
