Statement from NJSBA President Robert B. Hille:
As the victims of the Parkland shooting are being laid to rest, it is with the greatest sadness that I extend on behalf of the New Jersey State Bar Association our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims.
This is the latest in what has become all too familiar tragedy, happening with seemingly greater frequency.
While efforts have rightly focused on how to identify persons who threaten the safety of our children, the reluctance to address how to limit the ability to cause harm and the breadth of such harm have placed a whole generation at greater risk. It has also placed that generation and their parents under constant fear that these children may become victims of gun violence where they should be least vulnerable. No longer is school seen as a safe place.
In a sign of hope at a moment of such darkness, the survivors seek change and urge all of us to take action. It is time to begin a real and earnest conversation to create the change that will give these, and all children, the safe and hopeful future they deserve. With that hope in mind, we remember the victims of Parkland and all other mass and school shooting victims.
