Congratulations.
Welcome to this great profession. Standing here, I can remember being sworn in and I can tell you that it is one of my most treasured memories. I didn’t fully appreciate it at the time, but I can say now that it changed my life forever.
I’ve always had an interested in peace, equality, justice and seeing that the dignity of the individual is preserved and protected in the law. I think it is an overarching call, and I have always seen the law as a positive vehicle for change – a way to help people and make the world a better place.
The most important role an attorney can play is to bring equality and fairness to someone who otherwise wouldn’t be able to get it. This is a cherished and honored profession because we hold the keys to the courthouse doors for so many people and without that they wouldn’t otherwise get in sometimes.
The NJSBA is able to facilitate that.
My involvement has enhanced my practice in ways I never imagined. I have been privileged to create personal and professional relationships with judges, justices and talented attorneys from around the state.
As a member of the NJSBA I have enjoyed world-class continuing legal education taught by the absolute best and brightest. Our association, through our amicus efforts, has been involved in every significant legal issue to face our state. And we are the collective voice of all attorneys in the fight to preserve the independence of our precious Judiciary.
Today, in addition to offering my congratulations, I have some very good news for you.
I am pleased to tell you that your membership in the New Jersey State Bar Association and our Young Lawyers Division is free, so being a part of the largest group of judges, lawyers and other professionals in the state is a no-brainer.
Now I urge you to take the next step: Get involved.
The state bar association has so much to offer.
We have dozens of substantive sections to help you understand the area of law you practice in – from animal law to securities law — each of which offers a great way to explore specific practice areas and get involved.
We offer free legal research through Fastcase and we have networking events throughout the year to introduce you to other young lawyers, as well as veterans of the profession.
And we have recently launched a Leadership Academy to help young lawyers learn the skills necessary to become the next generation of leaders in our bar association, the legal community or society at-large.
So whether it’s because of our fabulous CLE, the social and networking opportunities or some of the many civic-minded projects the NJSBA champions, I hope you will get involved and find out for yourself what the New Jersey State Bar Association can do for you.
Thank you.
