Timely topics on tap at NJICLE programs this month

This month, the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education (NJICLE) is holding several seminars focused on timely topics.
   
“Legal & Ethical Considerations When Navigating Corporate Negotiations & Investigations” will be held Sept. 8, at The Imperia in Somerset, and is sponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) Senior Lawyers Special Committee. Retired Assignment Judge Travis L. Francis, will moderate a program that includes some of the leading attorneys, lawmakers and government officials in New Jersey. The panel will include Senator Kevin O’Toole, Attorney General Christopher Porrino, Thomas P. Scrivo, former counsel to the governor, as well as Paul B. Matey, Christopher M. Placitella, and Ellen Torregrossa-O’Connor.
   
On Sept. 11, Jon Finer, who served as chief of staff and director of policy planning under Secretary of State John Kerry, will be the featured speaker at the program “Global Risk in the New World Order—A Briefing for Attorneys.” Finer, a foreign policy expert, and notable international lawyers Patricia Apy, Eric Chase and Steven Richman, will discuss the changes attorneys need to understand in Washington, and how they will impact the world. The program will take place at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick.
   
At the Law Center two days later, on Sept. 13, the NJSBA Immigration Law Section is sponsoring “Understanding Asylum and Refugee Law,” featuring Judge Dorothy Harbeck, who appears in her personal capacity and is the eastern regional vice president of the National Association of Immigration Judges. Designed to help practitioners better grapple with the intricate details of asylum practice, the seminar’s panel also includes Susan Girardo Roy, Melinda Basaran, Matthew Boaz, Farrin Anello and Joyce Phipps.
   
A webinar on “The Opioid Crisis and its Effect on Patients, Doctors, Pharmacists and Nurses,” will air Sept. 19. It features Angelo Cifaldi and Satish Poondi, who are both attorneys and registered pharmacists, as well as Assemblywoman Joann Downey. The program will look at the legal issues surrounding the epidemic that kills 91 Americans every day.
   
“A Dialogue with Robyn Gigl: A Transgender Attorney Speaks about Unraveling Transgender Issues in 2017” is slated for Sept. 20 at the Law Center. Rather than a traditional lecture, the program offers participants an opportunity to have an open conversation about the law as it relates to transgender issues with a seasoned litigator who is also transgender.
   
On Sept. 26, at Westin in Mount Laurel, the NJSBA Senior Lawyers Special Committee will sponsor “Immigration Law: What Every Attorney Should Know,” featuring Kerry Hartington, Derek DeCosmo, Kelly Newman and Don Pak. The program will offer a bird’s eye view of current immigration law, including benefits and enforcement.
   
The fourth annual Art Law Symposium will be held on Sept. 28, in conjunction with the opening of the New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s annual juried art show. Moderated by Susanne Peticolas, with panelists Jacob Archer (an art crime team special agent with the FBI) and Russell Fishkind, Stephen Roth and Yael Weitz, the program will look at current issues of concern in the art world. Held at the Law Center, the program is sponsored by the NJSBA Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Section.
   
Closing out the month, on Sept. 29, will be “Think Big, Act Bigger: The Rewards of Being Relentless—What Lawyers Can Learn from a Fortune 100 Chief Marketing Officer.” Opening with a keynote address by Jeff Hayzlett, a former Fortune 100 chief marketing officer and primetime TV and radio host, the program will include a roundtable discussion of issues related to the practice and business of law. Panelists will include former American Bar Association President Paulette Brown as moderator, and speakers Kelly Ann Bird, Eric Fikry, who is a NJSBA trustee, NJSBA First Vice President Evelyn Padin and Rosaria Suriano.
