The Armenian catastrophe that started in early 1915 was first non-colonial genocide of the twentieth-century. Hundreds of Armenians were rounded up by the Young Turk regime, hanged in the streets or deported to the desert, where up to a million died or were murdered along the way.
For many decades, other countries, including the U.S. were reluctant to use the word “genocide” to describe these horrific events. As a result, the Armenian community has worked tirelessly to ensure justice and genocide recognition. In March 2010, a U.S. Congressional panel finally voted to recognize the genocide. On April 24, 2021, President Biden declared, "The American people honor all those Armenians who perished in the genocide that began 106 years ago today.”
Learn from this esteemed panel to increase your awareness of the events that took place during the Armenian genocide. You will also be part of an in-depth discussion of the legal ramifications of the slow recognition by other countries, the impact of recent genocide recognition on reparations and justice for survivors, as well as an examination and legal analysis of the current conflicts in the region.
