Congressman Rob Andrews
Former United States Representative

Presented in cooperation with the NJSBA Legislative Standing Committee

No matter where you live in New Jersey, both Trenton and Washington DC may seem very far away. Have you ever wondered how you can influence legislation?

Join former Congressman Rob Andrews as he provides you with an insider’s guide to practical information on how to lobby effectively and in accordance with both state and federal laws. Lobbying is constitutionally protected free speech, but it is extensively regulated on both the federal and state levels by complex rules and regulations. Individuals, companies, and organizations that employ lobbyists, lobbyists themselves, and government officials, must understand the breadth and scope of these laws and regulations, as violations can lead to penalties and even jail time.

Make your voice heard! Learn how to lobby effectively.

Register for this program plus “Don’t Like the Rules? Change the Law. Advocacy for Lawyers” and receive a $40 voucher toward your next seminar.

Topics include:

  • The law of lobbying on the Federal and state level
  • The practice of lobbying
  • Best Practices— Important compliance Do’s and Don’ts, such as DO register as a lobbyist if you are reasonably near the definition; and DON’T put your clients at risk by unduly narrow interpretations of definitions.
  • How to interact with clients, such as DO clarify and define the scope of your work and DON’T unduly raise client expectations.
  • Ways to interact with government officials such as DO make your “ask” and reasoning clear and DON’T be oblivious to the competing interests often faced by elected and appointed officials.

Program Agenda:

  • 12:30 | What are the applicable state and federal law and recommendations of best practices for compliance
  • 1:20 | Client interaction, agreements and notices to individuals and entities
