Navigating Parental Leave in the Legal Field is a unique workshop that clarifies the nexus between gender differentials in law firms and new parenthood and offers specific solutions to common issues that arise before, during, and after periods of parental leave. The workshop builds leadership skills, incorporates the human side of work life integration, and identifies opportunities for individualized or firmwide support.
Particular forms of support for working parents and new parents at law firms have a significant impact on productivity, loyalty, and success, with more attention to parental leave needed at many firms. The panel has witnessed many instances in which management has mishandled a parent’s leave in a way that contributed to that attorney leaving the firm or the field with a consequential impact not only for that attorney but also on firm productivity and culture. Recent research identifies an 18-to-1 return on investment for dollars spent supporting working parents.
The workshop is hosted by Marny Requa, J.D. and Anne Welsh, Ph.D. both certified RETAIN parental leave coaches and experienced speakers. Marny is a socio-legal academic, executive coach, and consultant. She is a U.S.-trained lawyer and gender equity specialist with extensive global experience in the European and Latin American markets. Anne is a clinical psychologist, executive coach and consultant with a practice focused on supporting women in law, having left a career at Harvard to open her own boutique firm. She frequently presents on women’s leadership development and brings a wealth of experience in supporting women in law and maternal mental health at work. Marny and Anne draw on their combined expertise in academic research, psychology, and the legal profession for an informed, supportive, and productive workshop.
This workshop will provide attendees necessary information to navigate a variety of key topics, including:
- The current state of parental leave in the United States, including relevance to gender equity and the legal field
- How to facilitate smooth and successful parental leave experiences at their firms or organizations
- Best practices for positive parental leaves and returns including strategies for effective communication, managing workloads, and maintaining a supportive work environment
- Essential planning techniques to ensure well-structured and fulfilling leave experiences, while navigating challenges and opportunities during leave
- Accepting the personal transitions working parents undergo, an acknowledgement that is vital to successful leave periods, particularly in potentially stressful work environments
- How organizations can foster supportive and inclusive workplace cultures, invest in the leadership pipeline while retaining talented attorneys, and minimize cross-functional disruptions caused by parental leave
