Are Dogs People Too? A Discussion of Issues Relating to the Changing Legal Status of Animals in New Jersey and Beyond
Animal Law Track (Central Meeting Room 4)
From legal challenges asserting personhood of an elephant, to statutes requiring Courts to consider the "best interest" of dogs in divorce matters, the landscape of animal law continues to rapidly evolve in many different forums. The panelists will address animal legal status in wildlife protection efforts, animal cruelty statutes, possession of domestic companion animals, and other substantive legal issues, both in New Jersey and across the United States. This will include a discussion of animal rights as they have evolved over history, and a review of the present status – and present challenges – being brought in the Judiciary and Legislature.
