Renowned Yale Law Professor Akhil Reed Amar, also star of the podcast “Amarica’s Constitution,” returns for a thoughtful and lively discussion about the U.S. Supreme Court’s last 12 months.
Join the NJSBA for a fascinating, fast-paced and entertaining conversation with this recognized thought leader in the law. As an attendee, you’ll hear Amar’s unique perspectives and analysis into the most controversial cases of the Supreme Court’s recent term.
Here are just a few of the holdings and issues from the last few months that could affect your practice:
- President Joe Biden announced initiatives for Supreme Court reform, including term limits on justices and new ethics rules. What are the constitutional implications of this and how might it affect the future of the Supreme Court?
- The Supreme Court’s holding in Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Counsel will have a wide-ranging impact on all regulatory agencies.
- Under Trump vs. United States, the president may not be prosecuted for exercising his core constitutional powers, and he is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for his official acts.
- Regarding gun control, the Supreme Court ruled in United States vs. Rahimi that individuals found to pose a credible threat to the physical safety of another individual may be temporarily disarmed under the Second Amendment.
- In Trump v Anderson, the Supreme Court held that the Constitution makes Congress, rather than the states, responsible for enforcing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment against federal officeholders and candidates. Under the ruling, the Supreme Court found that the Colorado Supreme Court erred in ordering former President Donald Trump excluded from the 2024 presidential primary ballot.
All of these cases, including others from the Supreme Court’s recent term, raise questions about the Constitution and how it applies to issues that affect our lives and the lives of our clients.
Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to gain key insights, answers and more. After Amar’s keynote address, he will be joined by a round table of notable NJSBA members to continue the discussion. Questions and comments from the audience will be welcome.

About Prof. Amar:
Prof. Akhil Reed Amar teaches constitutional law in both Yale College and Yale Law School. After graduating from Yale and clerking for then Judge (now Justice) Stephen Breyer, Amar joined the Yale faculty in 1985 at the age of 26. His work has won awards from both the American Bar Association and the Federalist Society, and he has been cited by Supreme Court justices across the spectrum in more than 41 cases—tops in his generation, and indeed among all active scholars.
He regularly testifies before Congress at the invitation of both parties; and in surveys of judicial citations and/or scholarly citations, he invariably ranks among America’s five most-cited mid-career legal scholars. In 2008 he received the DeVane Medal—Yale’s highest award for teaching excellence. He has written widely for popular publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Time, and The Atlantic and is the author of dozens of law review articles and several books. He was an informal consultant to the popular TV show The West Wing, and his constitutional scholarship has been showcased on The Colbert Report, The O’Reilly Factor, and Constitution USA with Peter Sagal. He is Yale’s only active professor to have won the University’s unofficial triple crown—the Sterling Chair for scholarship, the DeVane Medal for teaching, and the Lamar Award for alumni service.
